"Success makes so many people hate you. I wish it wasn't that way. It would be wonderful to enjoy success without seeing envy in the eyes of those around you."
— Marilyn Monroe
I think that I must have a vastly different definition of the word "success" than Marilyn Monroe. Maybe it wasn't envy she was seeing in their eyes but people wondering why everyone was paying such close attention to an idiot.
I've often found myself conflicted when choosing quotes by Marilyn Monroe (I believe it's the second one I've posted). I'm not a great fan of hers, and I'm not big on attention-whorism either. I was never able to sympathize with her tortured existence. However, if there's a quote that speaks to me I'd like to think of myself unbiased enough to post it.
"I have known the joy and pain of friendship. I have served and been served. I have made some good enemies for which I am not a bit sorry. I have loved unselfishly, and I have fondled hatred with the red-hot tongs of Hell. That's living."
— Zora Neale Hurston
