Honor Spotlight

Friedrich Kiesler
Born September 22, 1890 – New York City, December 27, 1965). Austrian-American theater designer, artist, theoretician and architect.

In 1942, New York art collector Peggy Guggenheim commissioned Friedrich Kiesler to design a gallery museum, to be called Art of This Century, for her collection of surrealist and abstract art. The resulting design, with its kinetic devices and biomorphic furniture, is, to this day, among the most exceptional spaces created for the display of art. It retains a deep influence on architects, designers, artists, and theoreticians alike.
