"I have known the joy and pain of friendship. I have served and been served. I have made some good enemies for which I am not a bit sorry. I have loved unselfishly, and I have fondled hatred with the red-hot tongs of Hell. That's living." — Zora Neale Hurston

I love that book and I agree it is incredibly modern still in its themes and the emotion the characters feel, even though 150 years old. It just shows we humans are not that different to the way we were probably 2000 years ago. Its just our surroundings and accessories which have changed!
I just finished it 2 days ago and I'm finding it difficult to concentrate on another I started reading immediately afterward. "Don Quijote" (Spanish edition)
I struggled with the "feminist theory" element of "Jane Eyre", but it left me with a Utopian intensity that was well worth every bit of frustration.
