Literary Pick (**)

Joseph Heller

By looking at the cover of the book (blue backdrop with Swastika-like little guy) I expected a serious story of espionage, or maybe something Naziesh, with a little intrigue and mystery, but instead what this book is is a bizarre comical satire of guys in the American Army. It caught me totally off guard and I had to re-adjust my frame of mind once I realized where the book was headed and what kind of story I was reading. The biggest mistake I made while reading it was to watch a clip of it on Youtube, because it's a movie I would never watch in a gazillion years since it's so stupid. Although I admit there were some funny parts in the book, it's not the type of humor I'm normally into.

The story is wacky, but Heller described all the characters well enough and it pains me to admit it was quite cleverly written. I can see why some people might like this book.

So what is this book about? it's army bureaucracy satire. Literary slapstick. It's silly comedy. Each character with their own unique problems that make up one crazy-ass regiment.

The only reason I gave this book two stars is because I laughed twice. I'm usually not one to complain about how long an author chooses to make his/her novels, but this was just ridiculous. I could have enjoyed the book more if it was half the length, and I don't mean I would have enjoyed an abridged version of it, I mean I would have appreciated it more as a work if Heller himself would have kept it at 250 max.

Have you seen Blackadder the 4th series? I think they took a lot of inspiration from this book as some of the plotlines and ideas are incredibly similar. I didn't particularly enjoy the book (I read it while in the first throws of love with my ex as he claimed it was his favourite book... even though he couldn't remember anything about it!).

How funny..I would've done something like that too.

No, I've never heard of Blackadder. I'll have to check it out, although, I can't say I would read it. Reading Catch-22 what like carrying around a brick-filled backpack all day long.

Blackadder is a tv show, and is tremendously good. It is the fourth season that takes so much from Catch 22.

Well that explains it since I don't watch television.
